Who’s afraid of New York Wolves? (And also writing songs. And not really wolves – more like coyotes).

I WAS able to break through and write songs during my rural escape. And, have been able to write more now that I’m back in NYC. The scariest part of the week in the country was – actually – the sensation of being in the middle of NOWHERE without neighbors closeby.

Did you know that at night it is really dark outside? Yeah, I didn’t know that. Also, did you know that when you’re not surrounded by 1.5 million people you can get a little freaked out?

Well ya can.

Totally hear you on that, although I live in Raleigh, NC – slightly smaller than New York. But I found out being in the middle of nowhere gives you something you can’t see in the city – the stars. The city lights obscure so many brilliant things in the night sky. Getting away from all that reveals the beautiful work of art God displays every night.

By the way, I was traveling back from Georgia last night and felt drawn to listen to your album again. Amazing as always, but I really got pulled into “Sorrow”. Perhaps as the title reveals it is not an upbeat ditty and maybe why I didn’t listen more closely before. But the pictures, the vocals, and the layers of music spread through that song were really good. I mean, you and Ben knocked that one out of the park.

Thanks again for an amazing album, and I can’t wait to find out what this latest songwriting trip of yours has produced.

Hey Nathan (Nathan? Nate? !!!!)

Yes I know what you mean about the stars. I was just so drawn by the DARKNESS that I don’t get to experience in the city. The night is sooo … sooo … BLACK. Like all of nature – the blackness tells me more about God. That He is many-faceted, full of opposites – light & dark – yet at the same time maintaining His ever constant, simple personality.

I’m so glad you like Sorrows. I almost didn’t record that song cause it seemed like an oddball. Now it is one of my favorites. I love that it has more of a jazz tonality – I don’t write in that often but love it so.

Yes – Ben is awesome. It’s just a fact. ;)

Please stay in touch. Thanks for commenting.
